Aging population: What it means for economies around the world
It’s not just a fiscal fiasco: greying economies also innovate less
Greater China, Japan, Germany, etc., all face similar challenges. Aging populations and shrinking workforces. By 2038, 32% of the population in Hong Kong will be categorized as "elderly". The "greying of society" has a huge impact on economic growth and (re)distribution of government spending to social services and welfare. While AI and automation may help with the former, a new social contract may be needed in respect of the latter as the elderly support ratio in Hong Kong will - if no reforms are done - fall from 4:1 (2019) to 2:1 in the late 2030s and 1.5:1 in late 2060s.
We invite you to join the upcoming meeting of the Economic Club of Hong Kong to discuss the topic of "Aging population: What it means for economies around the world", which is set for July 11th, 19:30-21:00 at Social Room (3/F, Won Hing Building, 74-78 Stanley St, Central).
